Live Bee Removal and Swarm Capture in Sanger, California

Sanger sits southeast of Fresno where the valley floor starts tilting toward the Sierra, and the town wears its nickname as the gateway to Kings Canyon honestly. Groves come right up to the last row of houses. Drive any direction out of town and you are in citrus and stone fruit inside a minute. For bees, that makes Sanger less a destination than a corridor. A good share of what shows up in yards here is passing through from the surrounding orchards, looking for a place to stop, and your fence post happened to be it.

That changes what the calls look like. Fewer deep wall extractions than in the suburbs, more clusters on branches, gate frames, and stacked pallets, and a lot of colonies in outbuildings. Sanger has an older housing stock and, behind a good share of those houses, a shed, a barn, a pump house, or a shop that nobody opens between October and April. Those are excellent bee real estate: dark, vented at the top, undisturbed. People find them when they finally go looking for a tool in spring.

Grove Traffic and the Buildings Nobody Opens

Bloom on this side of the county runs on citrus and stone fruit rather than almonds, and that keeps bee traffic around Sanger later into the spring than in the districts west of Fresno. Practically, the swarm calls do not shut off when the almond rush ends. If you live along the grove edge, expect a stretch of weeks where you notice more bees than usual in the yard, at the hose bib, and around the pool, and where a cluster can appear on a tree in the time it takes to eat lunch.

The old barns and pump houses are the other half of the picture. A colony that establishes in a rafter bay of a working barn is not automatically an emergency, and plenty of people out here simply leave it alone, which is a legitimate choice. It stops being legitimate when the entrance is over a doorway, near where the dogs are fed, or above where equipment gets started, because engine vibration is exactly the sort of disturbance that turns a calm colony into a defensive one. Location matters more than size.
